Your financial responsibility for unauthorized debit card charges heavily depends on how quickly you report the incident to your financial institution. Under federal law, if you report the loss or theft of your debit card before any unauthorized charges are actually made, you are not responsible for any subsequent fraudulent transactions. If the fraud involves only your card number being stolen (and not the physical card), you have zero liability as long as you report it within 60 days of your statement.
However, if your physical card was stolen and you fail to notify the bank promptly, your liability increases. It jumps from $50 if reported within two days, up to $500, and potentially unlimited liability if you wait past the 60-day mark. It is critical to document exactly when you discovered the fraud and when you notified the bank to protect your checking account balance.
