If you are a victim of debit card fraud, report the unauthorized transaction to your bank or financial institution as soon as possible. This can be done in person, by telephone or in writing. Under the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA), if you notice an unauthorized transaction on your account, you must report it to your bank within 60 days of the date the bank sends you the periodic statement that shows the fraudulent transaction. If your debit card or PIN is lost or stolen you should notify the bank within two business days after learning of the loss or theft to limit your liability to $50. Also, check your credit reports and file a police report. The bank will conduct an investigation and may require you to provide details or documentation related to the fraud. You should also monitor your account for any further suspicious activity.
